Before adding a pet door to a security door

A pet door creates an opening in the door or screen, so it is important to consider the complete doorway—not only the flap. Our Perspex pet doors include internal locking options, and the Security Lock Cover is designed to close the pet-door opening from inside the home. If your existing mesh or grille door is relied on as a security barrier, ask the door manufacturer or installer whether the proposed cut-out changes the door’s original security rating, warranty or intended performance. Where there is also a timber or glass door behind the security door, contact us to discuss a combination arrangement and the clearance required.

Is a Perspex security-door pet door the right fit?

  • High-tensile mesh door: Suitable where the cut-out area is robust enough to support the pet door frame. Thin mesh and flywire are not suitable.
  • Diamond grille security door: Suitable with the supplied general spacer. No grille information is required when ordering.
  • Cat or small dog: Select a flap size using the product-description dimensions, allowing your pet to pass comfortably.
  • Large, tall or wide dog: Extra Large, breed-specific, wide and custom-size options are available. Product descriptions list flap dimensions.
  • Security door plus timber or glass door: Contact our office before ordering. Combination arrangements can require a pin-up flap and specific clearance.
  • Exposed or marine location: These pet doors are not recommended in areas with direct high wind and rain or marine exposure.

Pet doors are more than just a convenience—they're a gateway to a happier and healthier life for your pets. A pet door allows your pets to explore their surroundings and return inside whenever they please, even if you're busy working from home or away during the day, offering them independence while making your life easier and giving you peace of mind.

Available in Black Matt, Gloss Black, or Solid White. The flap is clear with magnetised  closing.

Choose the lock option that suits how you use the door

Perspex pet doors for security doors have lockable barrel bolts on the inside of the home. For larger dogs, an additional set of barrel bolts can be added. If you want to close the pet-door opening while you are away, ask us about the SLC — Pet Doors Australia’s Security Lock Cover. The cover slides into the pet door frame and is secured from inside the home. The SLC is not available through the online store and has clearance requirements, so contact us before ordering to discuss suitability and pricing.

What we check before a security-door pet door is ordered

Security mesh and grille doors are not all constructed the same way. For a suitable installation, the section being cut must be robust enough to support the pet door frame; thin mesh and flywire cannot be used. For diamond grille doors, a general spacer is supplied. If your home has a paired security door and timber or glass door, tell us before ordering because combination setups can require a pin-up flap and additional clearance. A regular Perspex for Security Doors flap cannot be used later to retrofit an existing pin-up flap. Sharing clear photos of both doors and the proposed flap location helps us discuss the correct arrangement before work begins.

 Installation and quote process

You can install a Perspex pet door yourself if you're 'handy'. If you would like an installation quote, select “yes” at checkout and provide the installation address if it differs from the delivery address. Our preferred installer will contact you to provide a quote where the location can be covered. If your suburb or town is not covered, we will let you know and suggest that you contact a local security-door provider. For security-and-timber or security-and-glass door combinations, contact our office before ordering so we can discuss the required flap arrangement and clearances.
